- The Crimean Peninsula is a peninsula on the northern coast of the Black Sea. In the late medieval and early modern era, the region was mainly under the control of the Mongol Empire (1238–1449) and the Crimean Khanate (1449–1783). There were several autonomous Genoese colonies on the peninsula from 1286–1475.
