has description

The slaveholder named Girolamo de Porta sells an enslaved Abkhazan woman named Maria, who is approximately 30 years of age, to Baldassare Giustiniani for 222 lire and 10 soldi of Genoese currency. The contract notes that the enslaved Maria comes with all of her clothing. The means of payment involves three steps. First, a 149 lire promissory note from Baldasarre to the wool merchant Paolo de Albino. Second, a promissory note valued at 49 lire to Giovanni de Guirardis, and third a payment of 10 gold ducats, equivalent to 27.5 lire. The use of promissory notes to third parties suggests that the enslaved Maria was sold by Girolamo specifically to cover debts. Futhermore, Baldasarre has the option to return Maria to Girolamo within one year, in which case Girolamo must refund the full purchase price. If Baldassare decides to keep Maria after two years, Girolamo then has the right to buy her back at the original purchase price.
