The testament of the citizen of Savona named Giovanni Bresano made as he prepared to leave Chios and sail westward. Giovanni appoints Antonio Bresano (his paternal uncle), Giovanni Fodrato (the brother of his wife Maddalena), and his wife Maddalena as executors, fideicommissaries, administrators, and tutors of his daughter Margarita. He names Margarita as his primary beneficiary, to whom he he leaves a villa in Savona which he had purchased from a certain Marco Morando and to whom he orders 600 lire of Savona to paid in order to cover the remaining debt from its purchase. He mandates that Margarita, who is about 7 years of age, be maintained and educated in the household of Giovanni from the goods left to her. He also transfers his inheritance rights (from his father and mother) to Margarita as well as a bed and a Flemish feather mattress. In the case that Margarita should die unmarried, then Giovanni mandates bequests of 650 Savonese lire to the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Savona and 1250 Savonese lire to the Church of San Pietro in Savona for three weekly and one daily mass, respectively, and the remainder of Margarita's capital divided equally between Antonio Bresano (or, if he is deceased, his daughters Riccia and Mariora) and Giovanni Fodrato. In the case that Margarita married but without children, then she is permitted to dispose of half of her inherited capital freely, with one quarter going to the Church of San Pietro for masses and the other quarter going to Antonio Bresano and Giovanni Fodrato, in equal parts. To his wife Maddalena he leaves the sum of 400 Genoese ducats, deducts the value of 4½ loca of Savona (units of the communal funded debt of Savona) previously included in her dowry, and mandates the sale of a set of jewelry (a brooch with six pearls and a balas ruby, a string of 164 pearls, and two gold chains) in order to complete the sum. He also mandates that she any surplus above the 400 ducats after the sale of the jewelry to be distributed to poor girls for their dowries. He also leaves Maddalena her clothing, rings, some chests, silver belts, and other related items outright. Before the distribution of the residual estate, Giovanni orders the payment of 400 Savonese lire to his sister Isabella, 15 lire to the Massaria of Santa Maria Maggiore, and 15 lire to the Fabrica of Savona. He names five residual heirs, each of whom receives five equal fifths: poor girls for their dowries (up to 100 lire each); his uncle Antonio Bresano; the daughters of Antonio named Mariora and Riccia (they receive one-fifth in total), and his sister Maria Bresano (under condition that she provides dowries for her daughters); and Giovanni Fodrato. He also mandates that all his clothing be sold and the proceeds distributed to poor girls for dowries, up to 50 Savonese lire each.
